BRUCE MACKIE took the Open Men’s title when the Barbados Surfing Association held its fourth Zed’s Surfing Adventures/Cafe Sol Surfer Of The Year (SOTY) contest at Sand Bank, Cattlewash, last weekend. In a contest which saw reduced numbers due to some of the young surfers attending overseas contests, Mackie, Chelsea Tuach, Chelsea Roett, Danny Edghill, Johnathon Reece, Barry Banfield, Che Allan and Chris Clarke earned themselves gold medals after taking the top spots in the nine categories contested on Saturday. In challenging conditions of three-to four-feet waves, Mackie ripped, carved and floated his way to the top. His win in SOTY 4 eclipses his third-place finish in the SOTY 3 event held at Parlour last month.Tuach, the reigning Under-18 girls’ champion and the Caribbean ladies’ champion, won the Open Women’s division from her namesake Roett and Isabella Venezia, who were second and third, respectively. But Roett, who is so far leading the points standings in both divisions, bested Tuach in the Open Women’s divisions. Both Chelseas were just back from the Rip Curl Grom Search Surf Contest, held at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina Meanwhile, Barry Banfield, the man who walked his board, floated it and used it to carve the smallish waves, was the winner of the long board division. However, in back-to-back finals he did not repeat with the short board, finishing fourth in the Open Men’s division.Che Allan, the top Under-10 surfer, moved into a new category but continued his dominance by winning the Under-12 Boys’ Division from Zander Venezia and Evan Moll. On the opposite end of the age spectrum, Wayne Roett was the winner in the Masters Division and Chris Clarke was the top Senior Male surfer. The next event on the BSA’s calendar is the Caribbean Junior Summer Surf Fest slated for the Soup Bowl, Bathsheba, this weekend.
