PROMISING BARBADIAN cricketer Anthony Alleyne hit his seventh century of the year in England when he scored an unbeaten 138 off just 80 balls for Stoke D’Abernon against neighbours Maori Oxshott in the Surrey Championship last Sunday.
Alleyne, 17, a former Barbados Under-13 and 15 captain who attended Queen’s College before taking up a cricket scholarship with Dulwich College two years ago, struck 20 fours and three sixes in his innings.
According to a report on his team’s website, the left-handed Alleyne “smashed the ball to all parts of the ground, making full use of the short boundaries”.
His century, the 14th he has scored on English soil during the past two seasons, carried Stoke to a comfortable six-wicket victory as they romped to 202 for four in 30.4 overs, replying to Maori Oxshott’s 198 in 49.4 overs.
Third-highest
Alleyne’s knock was the third-highest score by a Stoke first-eleven player in League cricket. Normally an off-spin bowler, Alleyne also kept wicket in the match in the absence of Tom Frost and effected a stumping.
Since his return to England after playing in the Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools Tournament in his native Barbados for Dulwich, Alleyne was dismissed twice for 92 in matches against Kent and Middlessex while representing the Surrey Academy.
However, he made another century, 110 against Worcestershire in a two-day match which ended last Saturday.
Like his Barbados Under-19 teammate, Kraigg Brathwaite, Alleyne has around 40 centuries in age group and club matches in his cricketing career. (EZS)
