The Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU) did in fact have permission to hold a meeting at Alexandra School last Saturday.
Principal Jeff Broomes admitted this yesterday on the Down To Brass Tacks radio call-in programme hosted by Starcom Network Inc.
However, Broomes pointed out that he had received news of the school board’s approval only yesterday.
“. . . That information was never passed to the principal until 0743 [hours] this morning,” he told moderator Tony Marshall.
BSTU president Mary Redman said the board of directors of the secondary school had given permission in writing for the union to use the premises but her officers, parents and former students still found the gates closed.
Information disconnect
Broomes said yesterday there had been an information “disconnect” between the board and himself.
Broomes told listeners that after BSTU members found the gates locked, he was asked about permission for the meeting.
He said the board, which was not due to meet until later in the year, had already ruled on a similar request from the union and his position was “still in support of the board’s ruling”.
He told the programme he heard that on Friday the board’s chairman had approved holding the meeting at the school, but it was Tuesday when this information was passed on to him. (TY)
