AN INTRUDER BROKE into the home of Archbishop of the Sons of God Apostolic Spiritual Baptist Church Granville Williams on Tuesday night and fired gunshots when confronted by church members.
In an interview yesterday Williams said, “Tuesday night we were having one of our regular general meetings. We had a fairly good turn-out and wanted to give God thanks for the tropical storm missing us.”
Williams said that around 10:25 p.m, someone came into the hall and shouted “Granville, someone in your house,” and ran away.
“I told the congregation to take it easy and some of the men went down to investigate while the service continued. Then I heard a gunshot and thought ‘this is serious’ and tried to keep the congregation calm,” he said.
Williams said he was not an eyewitness to what had happened but recounted what he was told by the men who investigated.
“I heard two of the men confronted an intruder who tried to escape by scaling a wall only to find two other men from the congregation on the other side.
“They said they threw rocks at him which was when he took out a gun and fired and got away as the men scattered,” he said.
Williams said he did not know what the intruder was after but expected he would return. However, he said he felt no fear.
“I am not really afraid as I am not a person to fear quickly and I am not afraid to sleep in my own home. I will not run, whatever happens,” he said.
Williams said he had been receiving threats via telephone for the past year which he said had intensified over the past few months. He was therefore thinking of increasing security.
In August 2008, several thousand dollars was stolen from the church.
The money was the takings from that year’s Crop-Over Festival activities. (CA)
