THE Barbados Golf Club’s (BGC) special Golf Week will tee off today as part of activities marking the tenth anniversary of the upgraded public course at Durants, Christ Church.
A range of activities are planned which will bring together local and visiting golfers in competition for a variety of attractive prizes as they showcase their skills on the fairways and greens.
Several corporate sponsors have come on board for the special week of activities, including Banks, the sponsors of today’s KickStart Golf Tournament; Cave Shepherd, for the Ladies’ Day next Tuesday, and Mount Gay, for the highly anticipated night golf tournament on September 10.
Fun day
Sunday has been designated as a fun day where beginners will be introduced to the sport through the Starting New At Golf (SNAG) project and the Explanar golf training system which will be demonstrated by professional coaches.
Some of the more advanced young golfers will also take part in a nine-hole tournament in the afternoon.
Whole family
“Our objective is to widen the participation in golf across the island and our inaugural Golf Week will help in this regard,” said the club’s general manager Betty-June Leacock.
“It is an open week of activities and we are catering to everyone – beginners as well as experienced golfers. There are activities which can be enjoyed by the whole family,” she added.
Meanwhile, excitement is building towards “Lucky Monday” on September 6 when players of all levels will attempt “Ball In The Barrel” shots at the newly constructed driving range at Durants.
Those lucky enough to get a ball in one of three barrels will get a 25 per cent discount on membership at the Barbados Golf Club.
Health Day
Health Day is carded for Wednesday when golfers will benefit from the services of the Barbados Cancer Society, the Diabetic Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
The Barbados Golf Association is also on board and will host a two-ball fund-raising tournament tomorrow. Support has also come from other leading clubs on the island, including Apes Hill, Sandy Lane, Royal Westmoreland and Rockley Golf Club. (PR/EZS)
