Building code ‘not Town Planning’s responsibility’

The Town and Country Planning Department is not responsible for administering the Barbados Building Code.
Chief Town Planner Mark Cummins made this clear yesterday.
Cummins said his department had been receiving several calls following the fire at Campus Trendz store.
Cummins said: “The Barbados Building  Code is managed by the Barbados Building Standards Authority. That is a department of the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, and also the Barbados National Standards Institute.
“They have responsibility for the Barbados Building Code in terms of ensuring that whatever materials that are set out in the Building Code, that they meet a specific standard.
“But Town Planning is always linked to that,” he said.
Cummins added: “I think there was an excellent article in the Nation today where Mr Phillips, an engineer, clearly pointed out that since 1993 Barbados had had a building code. Professionals, designers, architects are duty bound to follow that building code whenever they are carrying out work.”
