A half-century by Jason Worrell in which fortune favoured him nine times – aided by the slippery fingers of the St Catherine fielders – allowed Maple to take a first innings lead of 90 on a very slow pitch.
It took Maple only two deliveries to finished off the home team after they resumed from their miserable 161 for nine, as Stefan Gooding was foolishly run out off the second delivery.
Maple set about their task in earnest, with openers Pedro Agard and Renaldo Parris posting 76 for the first wicket.
Agard survived a very confident leg-before appeal to fast bowler Joel Leacock, who also had him caught off a no-ball by Stefan Gooding at long leg, and saw the same fielder dropping an easy catch.
After reaching 43, including two fours and one six, Agard was bowled by off spinner Kenroy Williams. Parris was caught by Derek Bishop at first slip off Williams at the same score, and wicketkeeper Collis Worrell was caught by his opposite number off Kayode Pantophlet.
St Catherine had a sniff of containing the opposition at this time when the run rate was drastically slowed, but the fielders seemingly preferred to see Worrell bat, as they let several chances slip by.
Worrell struck only two boundaries, ending unbeaten on 54. Orman Kellman contributed 40.
Maple, boasting a healthy lead, declared their innings at 251 for seven, denying the hosts the extra point available for bowling a team out.
St Catherine closed the day at 14 without loss, needing another 76 runs before Maple can bat again.
