OLD BRIGAND Dover, the first team to gain promotion to the LIME Division 1 Competition under the Barbados Cricket Association’s new promotion-demotion system, suffered the embarrassment of being the first team to lose a match by default this season.
The team from St Lawrence, Christ Church, forfeited their eighth round match against CGI Maple at the Inch Marlow ground – located more than two miles from their base – where they play their home matches.
Bottom-of-the-table Dover were unable to field the required number of players at the 11:30 a.m. start of the second day of the match.
When play was called by umpires Dalton Holder and Ricardo Brathwaite, Dover could only account for six players – one short of the required number.
Among those absent were the Barbados Defence Force personnel who represent Dover in the Division 1 competition. It was reported that their transportation suffered a flat tyre while on its way to the ground.
The day’s play was scheduled to start 30 minutes earlier to make up for overs that were not bowled on the first day because of the weather conditions.
Dover were the fielding side at the beginning of the day.
Maple were awarded maximum 16 points that catapulted them to the top of the table. Dover did not gain any points.
On the first day, Dover were dismissed for 128 off 53.5 overs and Maple were to resume yesterday on 36 for one.
