UN a ‘talk shop’

UNITED NATIONS – St Vincent and the Grenadines has urged the United Nations to actively defend its role as the “global center of international governance and decision-making.”
UN Ambassador Camillo Gonsalves warned that if the global body fails to take heed, it faces the “real threat of devolving into a mere talk shop”.
In addressing the 65th Session of the UN General Assembly Gonsalves offered “a few simple suggestions to assist in achieving this goal”. (CMC)
US: No bail for Buju
TAMPA, Florida – The United States government is objecting to the motion for bail filed on behalf of jailed Reggae superstar Buju Banton.
The motion filed by Assistant US Attorney James Preston in the Sam M Gibbons federal court here, has said that Banton’s attorney has not given any legal support that the entertainer should be released pre-trial.
He said also that Banton “wholly ignored the court’s earlier detention order”.
“The motion should therefore be denied,” the prosecutor states in the document. (Jamaica Observer)
Sugar woes for Guyana
GEORGETOWN – Chief Executive Officer of GuySuCo, Paul Bhim yesterday confirmed that the sugar industry is facing a heavy production deficit saying that it has slumped to “some low levels” this year, but he expect things to “pick up soon”.
The industry has just over two months to pick things up before the crop ends in mid-December; and while Bhim is optimistic, the signs continue to paint a dismal picture, particularly in production. (Stabroek News)
Shelter materials needed
UNITED NATIONS – The United Nations said residents of more than 160 temporary settlements in Haiti are in urgent need of shelter materials. 
In a statement on Wednesday the UN said its agencies were providing additional relief to nearly 15 000 families after last week’s deadly rainstorm in capital, Port-au-Prince, but more help was needed. (CMC)
