FORT ERIE – Barbadian jockey Christopher Griffith scored a double on the 11-race card at Fort Erie on Sunday, as he continued to eye second spot in the jockeys’ standings.
Thompson took the CAN$11 040 first race with Skip The Night before returning to grab the CAN$10 800 third race with Dad’s Fishing, to take his season tally to 46 wins in the five-month season which finishes in two weeks.
He is third in the standings behind Real Simard who lies second on 55 wins, with Krista Carignan on top the standings with 81 wins.
Griffith first entered the winners’ enclosure aboard the bay filly Skip The Night, carrying the four-year-old to victory by 2-1/2 lengths going a mile and 70 yards for three-year-old and over fillies and mares.
He was patient with the 5-1 bet early on before making his move on the far turn, getting to the lead at the top of the stretch and edging away from the field.
Griffith tasted success again with the even-money favourite Dad’s Fishing, setting all the fractions over the six-furlong sprint to get the six-year-old chestnut gelding to the wire by two lengths in one minute, 12.45 seconds. (CMC)
