KINGSTON – Dozens of vendors in sections of downtown Kingston last Wednesday morningpulled down shutters to legitimate stores in the market district, claiming that if they couldn’t sell, no one else could.
The vendors took to the streets in protest following a police operation to remove stalls from the market district.
They said that from as early as 2 a.m., police began removing their stalls, leaving them without any source of employment. They also claimed that they were sprayed with tear gas.
“A demonstrate we ago demonstrate,” one irate vendor said, as he and others marched through downtown, creating chaos.
“We have pickney to go school and them a stop we food,” said another male vendor.
Police said the operation was to remove stalls that would hinder them from carrying out crime prevention operations. (Jamaica Observer.)
