KINGSTON – Thirty-nine people of a total of 50 wounded in a motor vehicle accident on Friday night remain in hospital in serious condition.
A 16-year-old girl was the only death in the bus mishap.
Reports from the Moneague police said that at about 8:40 p.m. a Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) bus was travelling towards Moneague with about 40 passengers aboard.
On reaching a section of the roadway the vehicle reportedly plunged off a precipice, resulting in the injury to the occupants. They were rushed to the Linstead and St Ann’s Bay Hospitals by motorists, personnel from the Moneague Training Camp and the Fire Brigade.
The driver, Jeremy Stewart, fled the scene.
However, pastor of the New Testament Church in Bay Farm, Portmore, Dr Welesley Blair, said despite the accident members of the church family were in high spirits.
He said the members were en route to a retreat, but they urged him to still carry through with the activity.
The JUTC’s communications manager Reginald Allen said that the driver authorised to drive the ill-fated bus was not the one behind the wheel at the time of the accident. (Jamaica Gleaner)
