HISTORY WILL BE created at Bushy Park today.
Following the launch of the Barbados Association of Dragsters and Drifters (BADD) racing club at Banks Breweries car park last weekend, over 45 cars are registered to take to the starting line for the club’s inaugural event.
Scrutineering begins at 8 a.m. and the official qualifying is set for 9 a.m. followed by live racing from 10:30 a.m.
Already the battle for bragging rights is mounting between competitors before the start of this first event.
Fans can look out for the likes of Michael “Chubb” Carter in a Honda Civic, Duane “Shabba” White in his SR Corolla and Shawn “Short Man” Eversley in his flighty Suzuki Swift, which is sponsored by Simpson Motors and Quick Start Auto.
Veteran Noel “Android” Pilgrim, in a Mitsubishi Mirage, and Hamilton “The Black Snake” Roachford in a Ford Mustang are also among the drivers.
After the briefing at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex on Thursday night, BADDchairman John “Tiny” Harrison told SATURDAY SPORTS that he was extremely happy with the response from the 140 plus paid-up members.
“This first event has exceeded all expectations. The committee is overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the competitors and the growing numbers joining the club at each meeting.
“I am particularly happy to welcome our first female competitor in Jackie Linton, who will create history by being the first female drag racer to race in Barbados when she takes to the start line,” Harrison said.
“We have a number of other female competitors who have already joined the club and other females are expected to join her, possibly in the next event slated for December 4 or early in the New Year.
“I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable day of racing,” Harrison said.
Today’s programme is sponsored by Banks Breweries in association with Twist Shandy, Big Gases Ltd., agents for NP Oils and Lubricants, Red Line Performance Parts, Williams Equipment Rentals, Exclusive Lighting, Ellco Rentals and Island Wide Ambulance Services.
