Super Dario dazzles Dover

DARIO VAUGHAN upstaged a half-century from Jamar Phillips to give TeleBarbados Carlton full bowling points against Old Brigand Rum Dover on the first day of their tenth series LIME Division One cricket match yesterday.
Vaughan collected five wickets for 71 runs from 14.1 overs, as Dover, choosing to bat on a hard, true pitch in sunny weather, were dismissed for 227 in their first innings less than half-hour before the scheduled close.
Phillips looked in fine touch when he stroked seven fours and three sixes to top score for Dover with 71 from 107 balls in just under two and a half hours.
Dover captain Sean Armstrong supported with 43, while former Barbados fast-medium bowler Vibert Greene made 36, and Shawn Smith, brother of Barbados all-rounder Dwayne Smith, added 27 in a useful eighth-wicket stand of 46.
Carlton reached 13 for one in reply, losing opener Richard Greaves lbw to Greene for six before bad light stopped play five overs early.
Vaughan, a former Barbados Under-19 leg-spinner, has inexplicably languished in Carlton’s Intermediate and Division 2 sides this season, where he has bowled steadily, if not spectacularly. He was promoted for this match, following the openings that have been created in the Black Rock side’s XI with Dale Richards, Carlo Morris, and Marlon Graham on national duty at the WICB Regional One-day Championship in Jamaica.
Slipshod fielding
Vaughan grabbed the chance, spinning out the lower half of the Dover batting, and could have finished with more had Carlton’s slipshod fielders not muffed no fewer than three chances.
Jamel Noel, the chief offender with two of the missed chances, had set Dover back early, when he had openers Shane Jones and Shanaldo Taylor caught behind for three and ten, respectively, to leave the visitors 15 for two.
But Armstrong joined Phillips, and batted resolutely in a stand of 109 for the third wicket either side of tea to stabilise the innings.
Phillips reached 50 with a leg-side single off Kurt Wilkinson, and looked in control before he was lbw playing across a delivery from Alex Bridgeman, after he and Armstrong carried Dover to tea on 98 for two.
Vaughan spun into action, and in a twinkling, Dover wobbled from 124 for three to 166 for seven.
After Armstrong was run out when he failed to beat Kirk Gibson’s throw from point to the keeper, Vaughan had Akeem Crookendale caught at mid-off for one, and former Carlton stalwart opener Wilbur Bruce caught at forward short leg for nine.
In between, Khalid Springer, the acting Carlton captain in Graham’s absence, bowled Malcolm Powlett for one.
Smith joined Greene, and they pulled Dover over the 200-run threshold, mixing sound defence with aggression, and the odd bit of fortune.
Vaughan made the breakthrough when he held a return catch to dismiss Smith, and quickly scalped Greene and tailender Jermaine Dey – both stumped – to prove to the Carlton selectors he should have a permanent place in their side.
