BARBADIANS WILL have to wait until early next year to get the findings of the Barbados 2010 census survey that gives an idea of the population’s size, age, sex, employment, housing and other details.
Acting director of the Barbados Statistical Service (BSS), Aubrey Victor Browne, made these disclosures yesterday.
Browne was speaking at the Bethel Methodist Church on Bay Street, St Michael, where employees of the BSS attended a service as part of their week of activities.
He said the enumeration, which started in May, was expected to last six weeks but “we had to extend it into July because of various unforeseen circumstances like bad weather, which prevented the enumerators from going out on some weekends”.
In August, the Statistical Sevices moved to cover some people who might have been missed when hundreds of data gatherers spread across the island and the department is now trying to complete this “wrapping up work”, according to Browne.
“We haven’t received all the completed field work in the census office as yet,” he reported. “Once we receive all the information, the compilation will start.
“The intention was for us to be doing the compilation on a continuing basis, from when we had started the field work. But, unfortunately, we did not have all of the staff in place at the time.
“So we couldn’t really start the actual compilation process when we had planned. We got the staff for the Census Office late. Most of that staff came in September. So the processing is actually delayed.”
Browne said it was expected that the results of the data gathering exercise would be “correspondingly delayed”.
The census employed 583 enumerators, 109 supervisors and 30 senior supervisors. (TY)
