PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti – At least 12 people were reported killed on Monday as heavy rains battered this French Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country, still recovering from an earthquake that killed more than 300 000 people in January.
Rescue officials said that eight bodies had been found in the streets of the devastated capital. The head of the Civil Protection Unit Nadia Lochard, said that a bodies of a two-year-old girl and an 11-month-old baby had also been recovered.
She said that the eight people may have been killed when a large pile of sand gave way, burying them. The bodies were then washed down the street.
Two other bodies were found in the district of Fontmara, outside the city, where a large number of people have been living in tents since the January 12 earthquake.
The authorities said they were also searching for three people reported missing.
The rains, which have been battering the country for the past few days, have turned streets into rivers and the National Meteorology Center has issued flash-flood warnings across Haiti’s southern peninsula through Tuesday. (CMC)
