Barbadians have turned out in their numbers at Parliament to view the body of the late Prime Minister David Thompson.
From as early as 9 this morning they were making their way to the place where Thompson served his country and constituency of St John for the past 23 years.
The family, including wife Mara, daughters Misha, Oya and Osa-Marie and parents Margaret Knight and Charles Thompson were first to view the body. Then politicians, other dignitaries and the general public followed, viewing the body of the man who was Prime Minister from January 2008.
The Nation’s Maria Bradshaw and Cherie Pitt are on the scene and report that among those attending this morning’s viewing were Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, Leader of the Opposition Owen Arthur and his wife Julie, Sir Roy Trotman, former Chief justice Sir David Simmons, politicians past and present and members of the judiciary.
Barbadians were also out in their numbers and lined the streets near Parliament Buildings.
The body of the late Prime Minister will lie in state for the next four days.
Tomorrow, viewing continues at Parliament and at Combermere School, Thompson’s alma mater. On Saturday there will be viewing at the Democratic Labour Party headquarters, and on Sunday, viewing will be at St John’s Parish Church.
