CASTRIES, – New West Indies captain Darren Sammy has been confirmed as the country’s newest Ambassador.
Already conferred with the title, the 26-year-old all-rounder was finally presented with his official passport on Tuesday night by Prime Minister Stephenson King in a special ceremony at the Beausejour Stadium.
Sammy, the first St Lucian Test cricketer, was feted before an audience that included his parents and his wife Cathy.
During his short speech, Sammy reiterated his desire to restore the enthusiasm lacking in the regional unit.
“Cricket is more than just a game to Caribbean people. It’s the one unifying force of the Caribbean,” he said.
“I remember watching cricket with my father [and I saw] the passion he had following the West Indies. The way our guys played was just amazing and that is what as captain I would like to bring back to the Caribbean people.”
Sammy was announced recently to lead the embattled West Indies, replacing Jamaican Chris Gayle who served as captain for the past three years.
Despite being a member of the Windies setup for the last six years, Sammy has played just eight Tests and 43 One-Day Internationals. (CMC)
