PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Former West Indies captain Brian Lara will join Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar in the official Trinidad and Tobago delegation which will attend the state funeral for the late Barbados Prime Minister David Thompson tomorrow.
Persad-Bissessar confirmed this week that she, the world batting legend Lara, along with a member of her cabinet, would make up the contingent.
“The Foreign Affairs Minister (Dr. Surujrattan Rambachan) and myself will attend the funeral on Wednesday and of course Brian Lara,” said Persad-Bissessar.
“Brian Lara is being specially invited to attend so he will also be a part of the Trinidad and Tobago delegation.”
Lara, 41, quit international cricket three years ago following the Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean.
However, he remains the world record-holder for the highest scores in Test and first class cricket, and is the highest run-getter in West Indies cricket with 11 953 runs from 131 Tests.
Several other prime ministers and dignitaries are expected to attend the funeral slated for Kensington Oval.
Thompson passed away on October 23 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. (CMC)
