Having a view to die for could prove to be too literal for over 20 people living in ten houses along the bluff in Zoares, Martins Bay, St John.
Following the passage of Tomas, a fissure stretching almost 800 feet and running 20 feet parallel to the cliff, offering a 60-foot drop to the Atlantic Ocean below, has opened up and created gaping cracks in some of the houses. It has also triggered fear among residents.
No one was more terrified than the Kings who, with the assistance of helpful neighbours, moved out everything that was not nailed down from their two-storey home which seemed destined to topple into the crashing waves below.
Daughter Lisa King said she was at home alone during the passage of Tomas while her mother was at work. It was only during the morning that she realised the cracks, with the house seemingly divided equally by a split running through the bathroom and the bottom level.
Mum Patricia was disturbed by the fact that her well-furnished and recently renovated house, which was built eight years ago, was now threatened by the forces of nature.
Pointing to some cupboards which were only built last week, Patricia stated: “My daughter and I were planning to really make in here look even better for Christmas and now we might not even have a home during that time.” (KB)
