Hurricane watch still on Tomas

The Miami-based National Hurricane Centre (NHC) in its 5 p.m. (local) time bulletin said that the Category One Hurricane Tomas was now packing winds of 75 miles per hour (mph) and located 70 miles south west of Great Inagua Islands and 90 miles east of Guantanamo in Cuba.
A hurricane watch remains in effect for Haiti, the southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
But the Cuban government has discontinued the tropical storm warning for the provinces of Santiago De Cuba and Holguin and has changed the hurricane warning in Guantanamo to a tropical
storm warning.
“Tomas is moving towards the northeast near 14 miles per hour and this motion is expected to continue for the next day followed by a turn towards the east-northeast at a slower forward speed Saturday night and Sunday,” the NHC said.
Aid workers said they were concerned that the storm will worsen Haiti’s cholera epidemic, which has killed more than 440 people and hospitalised more than 6 700 others. (CMC)
