A PHYSICALLY?ILL 52-year-old man who has been living in an old car for close to two months may finally be getting some assistance from Government.
Concerned friends of McDonald Worrell, who is living in a car parked at 5th Avenue, Austin Drive, Eden Lodge, St Michael, breathed a sigh of relief yesterday when a welfare officer turned up to interview him and assess his dire situation.
They said they had called several social agencies about Worrell’s unfortunate case but no one had turned up to help.
Clarence Rollins, the owner of the car, said he could not bear to see Worrell living on the streets, so he allowed him to sleep in the vehicle which is next to his house.
Another friend, who did not want to give her name, said she provided Rollins with towels, blankets, clothes and food and she also bathed him every morning.
“When the storm was passing I put a sheet of plastic over the car so he won’t feel cold nor get wet but he had to sleep in there.
He is not mentally ill but he is sick and he needs a roof over his head and someone to look after him,” she said.
She added that he had been evicted from a nearby house where he used to live with relatives.
“He suffered a stroke on August 13 and went into the hospital. He came out on September 13 but he did not have anywhere to go”, she cried, adding that he was so ill that she had to provide him with adult diapers.
Asked why he was living on the streets, Worrell in a barely audible voice said his relatives told him: “Don’t come here anymore.”
Welfare Officer Lionel Blades, said he would take the necessary information and his office would decided how best to deal with Worrell’s situation. (MB)
