KINGSTOWN, St Vincent – There has been heightened speculation in St Vincent and the Grenadines that Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves will announce the date for the general election over the weekend.
Political observers say that the Prime Minister will use a rally of his ruling Unity Labour Party (ULP) on Sunday to name the date for the polls.
Gonsalves himself has fueled much speculation on the date for the elections that are constitutionally due by March 2011 by telling ULP supporters that they should “make an extra effort” attend the rally in Calliaqua, a town on the south eastern coast on Sunday.
“… we are going to be in Calliaqua .… I want us to turn out in extremely large numbers, bigger than ever, to give Clayton Burgin the support,” Gonsalves said of his Works Minister who is seeking a third consecutive term as the parliamentary representative for East St George.
“You have to make sure – you came out here in your several thousands,” he said, adding “please make an extra effort on Sunday”.
The Prime Minister had told supporters that during the course of this week they would be informed on the plans for rebuilding the country and the economy following Hurricane Tomas late last month. (CMC)
