Determination, perseverance and patience were some of the characteristics graduands of the Barbados Community College (BCC) were urged to foster in order to soar to greatness and reap success.
During the 37th annual graduation ceremony held at the Gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex on Saturday, hundreds of graduands were also told by entrepreneur and former BCC student John Hazzard during his feature address to be like an eagle and grasp opportunities.
The theme of the graduation was Working Towards Self-Actualisation.
“Research has shown that the eagle . . . has been regarded historically as a symbol of power and great strength during [harsh] times.
Our prosperity as a nation depends, to a large extent, on the successful functioning of young people.
“In order to succeed, you should have or acquire the characteristics of an eagle and avoid the emphasis of persons who do not nourish your development.
“The eagle achieves through the following characteristics: determination, perseverance, patience and grasping opportunities,” he said.
“Graduands, if you could become like the eagle, you could soar to greatness and demand the respect of your peers. You will be admired by most but, remember, you will be envied by some,” said Hazzard.
He also reminded the graduands that perseverance would not help them to overcome difficulties and disappointment. However, the difficulties and disappointments were hurdles on the path to success.
He warned that one should not sit back, but at the same time do not get involved in any “get-rich-quick schemes”.
“Those who would have succeeded and achieved full self-actualisation would be those who recognised that success comes from keeping abreast with advances in technology, seeking out new experiences and analysing them,” he said.
Hazzard advised the graduands to learn to choose quickly and accurately and always develop a plan and “make it work”. He further challenged them to develop a positive self-image and position themselves for “the next phase”.
Valedictorian Richeda Boyce noted during her address that the college had provided them with the self-discipline and strength needed to overcome challenges on the path to success.
She said much had been given to them and it was time to give back.
“As we continue to bask in the glory of our accomplishments, we should be well aware that our journey is far from over. As one door closes, another one is opened . . . .”
She further thanked fellow graduands, tutors, members of staff and parents for their support throughout the years, noting that they were “now ready to take on the challenges that lie ahead”.
The BCC produced 1 535 graduates this year.
