Off-spinner Ryan Austin took four wickets and fast bowler Gilford Moore chipped in with three for 50 to give Sagicor UWI the edge over Banks on the second day of their 11th round LIME Division 1 match yesterday.
At the close, Banks, in reply to the home team’s big total, eased their way to 193 for seven.
UWI declared their first innings at 305 for six after they resumed from their overweek score of 267 for five with Nekoli Parris unbeaten on 29. He went on to make 63 with three fours and two sixes, while Floyd Reifer added three more to his 40 before he was run out.
Banks started their reply very shakily in the very first over when Kofi Hurdle thought he had the line right and left alone a delivery from fast bowler Moore that took his off stump.
At the other end, Martin Nurse was very severe on all the bowlers. He struck eight fours and three sixes in his 71, which was scored off 49 balls.
However, Austin, who was introduced very early, had the last laugh when he was hammered for two sixes over mid-wicket and a boundary through the off-side.
In taking 16 runs from three deliveries, Nurse went again for another big hit but skied the ball to Moore at short extra-cover.
Moore was back in action when he had captain Keegan Alleyne caught at point for 15.
But it was Austin who continued from the northern end with the wickets of Marlon Barclay, who caught at forward short leg for three, while wicket-keeper Renaldo Holder was neatly taken by his opposite Kyle Corbin and later Carlos Brathwaite was trapped leg before for 31.
Veterans Sherwin Campbell, who was unbeaten on 33, and Orion Bostic with 32 tried their best with a 52-run seventh-wicket partnership to rebuild the early damage.
But Bostic, after receiving and despatching a number of short-pitched balls from Moore, eventually fell when he mistimed a pull to mid wicket.
In fading light, Tariq Hoyte joined Campbell and the two survived to the close with Banks needing 113 more runs to surpass UWI’s total.
