Injunction filed to block by-election

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Lawyers representing a former candidate of the  main opposition People’s National Party (PNP), Manley Bowen, have filed an injunction seeking to block a by-election to be held in the North East St. Ann constituency on December 20.
Prime Minister Bruce Golding name the date for the by-election as a news conference held at the headquarters of the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) today. He said Nomination Day would be December 3.
The North East St. Ann seat was declared vacant by the Supreme Court last month after Shahini Robinson, who successfully contested the last general election on behalf of the JLP, admitted that she held United States citizenship.
The JLP said that Robinson would be its candidate for the by-election.
Attorney Raymond Clough had vowed to take legal action if there is any attempt to call the by-election while a petition concerning the seat is still before the courts.
A ruling is expected on March 21 next year. (CMC)
