Twenty-eight Roadside Accident Memorial Markers have been placed at various locations across the island.
The Barbados Road Safety Association has chosen this number because the country is now averaging 28 fatalities annually based on figures over the last ten years.
The markers are triangular with the apex facing up and serve to caution road users of the dangers that occur on the roads.
In choosing to implement this initiative, the road safety body approached the Ministry of Transport and Works in November 2009 with the intention of doing more to recognise the third Sunday in November which is World Day Of Remembrance For Road Accident Victims.
According to the association, November was also declared Road Safety Month as it is also that time of year – Independence and then the Christmas holidays when it is reported that many persons drive impaired while enjoying the festive season, and where added precautions are necessary to remind road users to be extremely careful.
