Barbados players Marcus Clarke and Lyn DeCambra Mcleod are poised to make bids for the championship, going into the final day of the 2010 RBC/RBTT Classic today at the Barbados Golf Club.
On the opening day, yesterday, when 120 players took to the fairways and greens , Clarke surged ahead of his rivals with a gross 74 in the men’s championship division.
On a course slowed by heavy overnight rains, the British-born Clarke showed consistent form as he shot 37 on the front nine and 37 on the back.
Chasing the favourite was Judd Cozier, another Barbados representative, who shot 76, also showing a measure of consistency with scores of 38 and 38 over the 18 holes. Third was Igna Smart on 77.
Among the women, Lyn DeCambra Mcleod took an early three-stroke lead over Julia Stephenson as she shot a first-day 82. Stephenson posted 85 while teenager Serena Smith was four strokes behind the leader with a gross 86.
In the men’s first flight Canadian John Phillips (12 handicap) made the early running with a gross 82 but was under pressure from RBTT executive Frank Drakes who also shot 82.
Another RBTT senior executive Horace Cobham (14 handicap), was among the top fliers with a gross 85.
Veteran Barbados players Michael Haynes and Robert Piggot were shaping up for a showdown in the senior men’s catergory as both shot 75 and pulled away from fellow Holder’s Hill resident Ricky Skeete , who struggled while posting a gross 79.
The Classic, now in its sixth year and one of the is organised by the Barbados Golf Association and is being contested over 36 holes. (BB)
