Barbadians will get a chance to hear musical genius and Grammy award winner Marcus Miller when he performs in Barbados on December 12 and 13 at the FirstCaribbean Christmas Jazz, which comes off at the Plantation Garden Theatre.
Miller is best known as a bassist working with trumpeter Miles Davis, singer Luther Vandross and saxophonist David Sanborn.
He also won a number of Grammy awards as a producer for Miles Davis, Luther Vandross, David Sanborn, Bob James, Chaka Khan and Wayne Shorter.
He won a Grammy for Best R&B Song for Luther Vandross’ Power Of Love and in 2001 he won Best Contemporary Jazz Album for his fourth solo instrumental album.
Miller is also a musical all rounder, classically trained as a clarinetist, familiar with the keyboards, saxophone and guitar.
He was raised in a musical family and by 13 was proficient on a number of instruments.
Miller soon became a top call session musician, gracing well over 500 albums, a short list of which includes Herbie Hancock, Mariah Carey, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Frank Sinatra, Dr John, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Grover Washington Jr, Donald Fagen, Bill Withers, Chaka Khan, LL Cool J and Me’shell Ndegé Ocello and Flavio Sala.
During the late ’70s he was a member of the Saturday Night Live band and played on over 500 recordings, including those by Luther Vandross, Grover Washington Jr, Roberta Flack, Carly Simon, McCoy Tyner, Bryan Ferry and Billy Idol.
Miller joins others like Kenny Lattimore and Kirk Whalum on the local stage for the jazz show now in its eighth year. (PR)
