There has been a call to action for Corporate Barbados to demonstrate their commitment to protect human rights and promote non-discrimination.
In keeping with the World AIDS Day theme Universal Access And Human Rights, AIDS Foundation of Barbados Inc. president Anthony Phillips said, “We recognise that HIV/AIDS is an issue that requires a robust response from the business community.”
He was speaking as the foundation launched a Charter on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights in the Workplace in Barbados at Accra Beach Hotel this morning.
There was also a plea from Phillips for more businesses to adopt the Charter and boldy display it in a common area within the workplace so that emplyees can further appreciate the company’s obligations.
In relating 2008 statistics for Barbados, Phillips said, the minimum prevalence of HIV in the economically active age range of 25 to 44 years is greater than one per cent, a figure that is considered high and of grave concern as the rate of new infections continues to rise. (LK)
