Letting loose

Last year, American Robert Letting ran side by side with Philip Lagat for half of the Run Barbados 10K, but could not keep pace with him over the latter part of the race.
Yesterday, Letting decided to set his own pace, ran his own race and is now celebrating his second title in three years in the Powerade-sponsored event.
Letting crossed the line in 28.53 minutes, one of the fastest times in the last seven years, but still outside the 28.40 set by Kenyan Joseph Kariuki in 2002. Lagat finished fourth.
Fellow American Janet Cherobon-Bawcom, the 2007 champion, is also celebrating her second title. Both are expected to compete in the Scotia Bank Half-Marathon today.
