The hockey dynasty which was established at the Combermere School many decades ago by Colonel Deighton Maynard showed its pedigree when the Waterford institution captured both the boys’ and girls’ senior National Sports Council/Sports & Games Barbados Inter-Schools titles at the Astroturf yesterday.
Playing against two teams that have established modern day records of their own, Combermere girls dismissed Springer Memorial 3-1, while Combermere boys edged the defending champions Garrison Secondary 1-0. Â
Those senior titles were added to the Under-13 boys’ and girls’ which Combermere captured the previous evening.
Combermere girls were carried to victory with strikes from D’Jamilla Edwards, MVP Lyn-Marie Wilson and junior MVP Vanessa Chewitt who had scored the most goals, six in her under 13 team. Â
Wilson had previously scored ten goals – most in the preliminaries in the seniors. Shekinak Tappin converted a penalty for Springer.
Combermere boys played a fast game with tight defence to stymie the great skill of national player Akeem Rudder who was not given any freeedom to add to his tournament high of seven goals.
A number of forays by both teams ended with Jamar Ward of Combermere scoring the loan goal of the contest in spite of some close encounters by the evenly matched opponents.
Rudder, who moved up from the Under-15 as an MVP and a champion, was only able to retain his MVP status as well as the honour of scoring the most goals. Â
Combermere not only ended as the most decorated team in the competiton but they also earned the title of Most Disciplined Team, obviously a legacy of the Colonel’s drills. (KB)
