Old market a dump in The City

THIS PICTURES show just a little of what the Fairchild Street Market, The City, has been reduced to – a urinal and dump.
The abandoned market is no longer a place of business since its closure but instead now hosts rodents and vagrants.
It has been earmarked for demolition onmmore than one occasion but each time this has been postponed.
However, whether these postponements have been due to concerns about asbestos is not known because attempts to get an answer were stymied, as officials in both the Ministry of Transport and Works and the Ministry of Agriculture said the other was responsible for what was happening with the market.
In a previous interview, John Alleyne, who works in the area, said he did not think anyone wanted to take responsibility for the market, but added someone would have to take action if a rat bit anyone.
Yesterday, a DAILY NATION team revisited the area and spoke to car washer Wayne Scantlebury and another washer who requested anonymity.
They said vagrants were responsible for the state the market was in but added the Sanitation Service Authority could also do better by sending people to clean the area outside the market on a regular basis.
“If they ever knock this down, there will be so much rats in people’s houses . . . ,” the unidentified car washer added. (CA)
