Jersey barriers on ABC Highway

WORK CONTINUES on the ABC Highway as personnel from the Ministry of Transport and Works are placing jersey barriers along the stretch from the Garfield Sobers Roundabout to the Errol Barrow Section.
This phase is expected to take five months and is part of the multimillion-dollar highway expansion project.
The barriers are expected to increase the safety of road users and reduce the incidence of fatal accidents on the highway.
President of the Barbados Road Safety Association, Sharmane Roland-Bowen, said the association fully supported the barriers as they were a road safety measure, especially in the area known as “the Bermuda Triangle”.
However, she outlined a few grouses she still had concerning the use of that stretch of highway.
“We would like Government or the police to take a look at how people going to a nearby bar off the road are parking along the shoulder of that area of the highway, especially on weekends,” she said.
Roland-Bowen said it made no sense to place a life-preserving measure like jersey barriers there, yet still allow life-endangering practices.
“The owners of the business should have parking facilities, not encourage people to park on the highway.
“We need to stand firm, as little things turn into big things – which is why some people don’t respect the law,” she said. (CA)
