Drakes’ turn

The job of lead coach of the Barbados cricket team has changed hands again.
Vasbert Drakes, who was replaced by Emmerson Trotman in the position last season, will take charge again for 2011. While Drakes will assume the lead role and also be bowling coach, Trotman will serve as batting coach.
In explaining the move, chairman of the Barbados Cricket Association’s (BCA) cricket development committee Conde Riley said it was not a promotion or demotion for either coach, but a continuation of a policy to aid the development of both Drakes and Trotman.
“We are doing it because we feel it will give both guys a chance to get exposure. We had a rotation policy in place which we are continuing,’ Riley told said yesterday.
“One year Vasbert was the lead coach, the following year it was Emmerson. It will be Vasbert next year and Emmerson the following year.”
The 41-year-old Drakes, who played 12 Tests and 34 One-Day Internationals for the West Indies between 1995 and 2004, was first involved in the Barbados coaching set-up as assistant coach to Hendy Springer in 2007.
He took over as head coach in 2008 when Springer was unavailable because of duties with the West Indies team and ultimately because of his appointment to the post of BCA director of coaching.
Trotman, 56, a former Barbados batsman who lived in Holland for many years before returning to Barbados, served as assistant coach of the national team in 2009 before replacing Drakes as lead coach for the 2010 season in which Barbados were joint champions in the regional 50-over competition and finished as runners-up in the four-day first-class competition and the Caribbean Twenty20.
Both Drakes and Trotman are employed by the BCA on a full-time basis in the capacity of coach and report to the director of coaching.
