God will see Barbados through these difficult economic times.
That was the message to worshippers at St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cathedral from Father Clement Paul on Old Year’s Night.
In his sermon to a packed church on Bay Street, St Michael, Father Paul reflected on the economic turmoil of the past year, and while anticipating a continuation in the New Year, he urged the congregation to reassure themselves that “God is with us”, having them repeat the words continuously throughout his sermon.
He made reference to the level of shopping done by Barbadians over the holiday period, quipping that in a difficult economic climate, shop owners had to persuade Barbadians to leave on Christmas Eve in order to close their doors.
“We were faced last year with the news of how bad things were going to be, and up to last night, I heard that all the black dresses in town were sold out,” Paul said to laughter from the congregation.
He suggested this was an example of the Barbadian resilience and determination to survive in the face of hardship.
