Some Barbadians are supporting Mara Thompson’s decision to contetst the St John by-election on January 20.
Mara, the wife of the late Prime Minister David Thompson and MP for the constituency, said she is ready to contest the by-election and has already written to the executive of the Democratic Labour Party expressing her interest.
She is among 12 prospective candidates who have indicated an interest in contesting the seat. Most, if not all, are expected to withdraw from the race now that Mara has made known her intentions.
Today’s nomination is scheduled to take place this evening at 3 p.m. at the Gall Hill Community Centre. The party’s executive and general councils are expected to ratify a candidate by 8 tonight.
We asked our online readers to share their views on Mara’s intention to enter the political fray to represent the people of St John.
Keisha wrote: “I’m glad Mara took the decision to contest the St John seat. Mara knows exactly what her late husband wanted for the people of St John and she’s going to do a great job. I ask God to give her the health and strength she needs”.
Michael Turton wrote: “I’m elated that the Thompson legacy will continue”.
Greta Marlin said: “As a woman it gives me great pride to see more and more women entering the political arena. It shouldn’t matter that her late husband was the Prime Minister. What should matter is that undoubtedly she will do a wonderful job of representing the people of her constituency. I know that she will make a difference and will put country above self”.
Cammie Wiggins wrote: “Congrats Mara and may God bless and guide you on this journey”.
