Cellphone theft has become a major crime issue in Barbados and police are embarking on discussions with telecom providers, LIME?and Digicel, to deter offenders.
Commissioner of Police, Darwin Dottin, says they are plans to have substantial discussions with these two companies to come up with measures that will “make cell phones less attractive to thieves.”
Dottin says the rising theft of cellular phones has caused enormous problems for crime fighters, noting that cell phone theft have become an internal problem. He says it is estimated that 16 million cell phones are stolen worldwide every year.
“Cellphones have become very trendy. Everyone wants a BlackBerry and to show off the latest in technology. Theft of cellphones is a quick way to make money because we estimate that people steal cellphones and re-sell them.
“Cellphone theft is a problem that is causing us significant problems in Barbados,” he says. His comments came during a press conference earlier today.
The Commissioner says the police will be providing tips and crime prevention advice to phone owners.
