The much anticipated polo season will officially kick off today with a six-goal tournament  at the Clifton Polo Estate in St Thomas.
Speaking to WEEKENDSPORT after a practice session at Holder’s on Tuesday, patron of the Clifton Polo Estate, Bruce Bayley, said that the guys were eagerly looking forward to the official start of the season.
“Last year we had lots of unusual weather at the start which saw a number of cancellations and postponements of matches. This year we are hoping for much better weather,” he said.
“The field at Clifton is in tip top shape and hopefully we will have some good action to officially kick off the season.”
The sport, which has been growing in popularity, is expected to be strengthened by the introduction of another venue at Buttals in St George.
This latest addition brings the number of grounds in the island to five. The other four are the Barbados Polo Club (Holders), St James, Apes Hill Polo Club, also in St James, Lion Castle, and Clifton in St Thomas.
One noticeable change for the season has been the selection of the playing days.
Previously matches were played on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays with an occasional game on Saturdays. However, matches will now be played on Sundays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Today’s matches at Clifton will see Mercedes taking on Apes Hill 2 at 3:30 p.m., while it will be a banks affair at 4:30 p.m. with First Citizens taking on FirstCaribbean. (CH)
