BARBADOS KICKED OFF celebrations of the 100th anniversary of its electricity with steel pan music, dance, choral singing and prayer.
The Barbados Light & Power Co. Ltd. (BL&P) launched the celebrations Sunday afternoon with a thanksgiving service at the Barbados Defence Force’s headquarters, St Ann’s Fort, Garrison Hill, St Michael.
Senior Pastor Emeritus Holmes Williams of the People’s Cathedral told the gathering of about 400 that the company had been able to “bounce back” with good service every time a storm had severely damaged the island’s electricity infrastructure.
“The BL&P is involved in work that is resulting in a blessing to everyone,” he declared. “Light & Power is contributing to the well-being of people everywhere.”
In a sermon dealing with light and darkness, he said: “Lights run thieves more than dogs and guns.”
He added that light was associated with many good things.
BL&P’s managing director Peter Williams said Barbados was the first island in the region to benefit from the coming of electricity, in 1911, under the Barbados Electric Supply Corporation. (TY
