Vocational centre opens in St George

SOCIETY MUST chip away at the stigma and negative mindset associated with vocational and training fields.
This call came from Minister of Labour Esther Byer-Suckoo yesterday as she addressed the opening ceremony of the Barbados Vocational Training Board’s St Luke’s Centre, in St George.  
Byer-Suckoo said that people should stop making young people feel that because they had to take a career as an artisan or in one of the vocations, such as carpentry or plumbing, that they were “less” in our society than those who had gone to university and done history or economics.
The minister also called on parents to broaden their horizons and give their children a wider range of career options.  
She said that if children were not doing well in mathematics and English they should be encouraged to work but should not be “discounted” as their skills may be with their hands. (LK)
