CHARGERS moved within one point of a double crown season with a straight-sets victory over British American Insurance Jackson when the Goddards Enterprises Limited Division One women’s volleyball competition continued on Wednesday night at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
It was exactly a decade ago in 2001 that Chargers won their one and only double crown title. In the intervening years Chargers captured the league and knockout titles separately.
Chargers’ 25-23, 25-21, 25-17 victory came against a team that carried the name of their former sponsors. Jackson also contained a number of the officials and players that were part of Chargers during their many championship years.
The pint-sized Sherrie Norris came off the bench for an out-of-sorts Talya Layne to score some successive kills to give Jackson a faint hope of at least matching their first-round five-sets loss. However, the total team strength of Chargers was too much. Â
Chargers just need one set in their remaining games against Sentry Insurance Brokers Deacons and a very weakened Rockets to take the league crown.
Deacons maintained the Rockets’ descent in the absence of boosters Shari Matthews and Anicia Wood by crashing the previous high flyers 25-19, 25-15, 25-23. Â
An under-staffed Carefree Toners carried 8000 Inc. Carlton closer to a winless season, beating them 28-26, 25-22, 25-20.
In the lone men’s game defending champions RBTT Deacons disposed of a fiesty Friendly Hall in straight sets – 25-21, 25-14, 25-20. (KB)
