Some vintage records fell by the wayside as Dalton House romped to their fifth straight title at the Harrison College Inter-House Track and Field Championships yesterday at the schools grounds at Crumpton Street.
Dalton led from pole to pole, amassing 1 725 points in a dominating performance. Collymore, who were in third place for most of the day, made a late surge and finished second with 1 440 points, passing Armstrong (1 427.5). Deighton were a distant fourth with 850.5.
Two of Reuben Bayley’s records were finally erased from the books. Ibrahim Hinds of Collymore clocked 1 minute, 59.86 seconds, just inside the 1:59.90 set back in 1980.
Senior victor ludorum Jerrad Mason of Armstrong also erased Bayley’s 33-year record in the Under-17 Boys’ half-mile. Mason was timed at 1 minute, 58.74 seconds, shattering the 2:04.60 from 1978, a mark equalled by Clint Lawrence back in 1992.
Mason completed in every single event and finished with 95 points.
He also set a record of 56.34 seconds in the 400m hurdles, inside the 58.01 set by Terry Marshall back in 2004.He also had wins in the 100 (11.33); 200 (22.66); 1 500; 100mh; as well as the long jump, high jump and triple jump. He picked up points in the javelin, discus and shot put.
Showing lots of improvement this year is Raedon Benn who was second in the 100 and won the 400 in 54.10, as Mason didn’t qualify for the final.
Junior victor ludorum Mario Burke of Dalton erased two of Mason’s records en route to amassing 102 points. Burke replaced the 43.77 in the 300mh with 39.83 and lowered the Under-15 Boys’ 400 from 53.27 to 53.23.
Burke was without equal in the Under-15 division. He won the 100 in 11.77, slowing down at the end and looking back at Collymore’s Miguel Franklin (11.96). In the 200m, he blew off the turn and crossed the line in 24.02, Franklin again second in 24.18.
He also won the triple jump, long jump, 1500 and 800 and was second in the 80m hurdles behind Franklin, who set a new mark of 11.43 seconds, erasing Tyrell Forde’s 11.53 set in 2006.
Cherrisse Lynch of Armstrong, who came over from The St Michael School, erased Andrea Blackett’s Under-20 girls’ 400m which had stood since 1993.
Lynch was timed at 58.50, downfrom the 59 seconds flat. In the 800m, she clocked 2:26.66, almost three full seconds inside the 2:29.29 formerly held by Najuma Comissiong. She also won the 100, 200, 1500 and high jump; was third in the discus, shot put and triple jump and fourth in the long jump.
The final record was set by Dalton’s Under-20 Boys’ 4×100 metres relay team, clocking 51.44 seconds to replace the 52.35 set by Armstrong back in 1988.
