Murdered UWI student remembered

Tears flowed today as students, faculty and staff of the University of the West Indies Cave Hill campus celebrated the life of Roderick Reid, while at the same time establishing an academic award in his name.
Reid, a 31-year-old  law student and a resident of Greater Portmore, St Catherine, Jamaica, was found dead in a motor car about two weeks ago with multiple stab wounds across his body. Speaking on behalf of the Faculty of Law, Senior Lecture Tracy Robinson said she got to know Reid during his first year at Cave Hill while lecturing him in a Commonwealth Caribbean Human Rights class.
Robinson remembered him as a “passionate student of the law who had an outstanding academic record”.
President of the Law Society and fellow countryman Andrew Wildes said that while he has lost people close to him before, Reid’s death was the most painful because of how he was murdered.
“It’s like someone sees a plant in full bloom and then cut it in half,” Wildes lamented as the tears flowed from his eyes.
Wildes said Reid’s death was not a random statistic and called on the Jamaica law enforcement authorities to ensure that whoever is responsible for his colleague’s death is brought to justice.
Residents of Waterloo Road in Rollington Town, Kingston 2 discovered Reid’s body after they observed a grey Honda Accord motor car abandoned in their community. (CMC)
