Progressive’s dreams of double crown glory turned to ashes on a night of roses, chocolates and other goodies as defending champions RBTT Deacons jumped straight to the ‘goodies’ giving the knockout kings straight love with a 25-16, 25-21, 25-19 win on Monday night at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
With Deacons having lost just one game in the Goddards Enterprises Limited League to Progressive’s two, the latter needed to at least inflict another loss on Deacons to maintain their probable chance of double crown honours.
However, with only young turk Akeem Payne battling with any consistency, Progressive never looked like stopping Deacons.
The mercurial Chargers remain the only stumbling block to prevent Deacons from retaining the crown in the extended 2010 season after Chargers also shared out some loving in avenging their first- round upset to Sunpower Foundation United 25-20, 25-14, 25-21.
Like Progressive, Foundation’s only consistency came from Nate Williams.
Chargers will need to stop Deacons in less than five sets if they are to take the title with most fans being accustomed to seeing Chargers in such inviting positions and then failing to deliver even against less formidable foes than Deacons.
On the strange all boys night out, Cawmere halted the advances of the BNB Juniors 25-22, 21-25, 25-11, 25-22 and O-Aces rejected Friendly Hall, 25-22, 25-16, 21-25, 25-18.
