FLYING FISH seem to have gone into their usual hibernation at this time of the year, and Bajans are once again paying $60 per hundred for the delicacy.
Just a few months ago the fish were so plentiful they were selling for as low as $20 per hundred, but fishermen have been getting very small catches which cannot fulfil the household needs or those of the fish vendors.
A check around the island showed that vendors at various fishing markets were singing the same tune. Most of them attributed the low catches to the rough seas and cold waters.
One fisherman at Consett Bay in St John said customers had been repeatedly calling for flying fish, but pointed out that rough seas had forced most fishermen in that area to stay out of the water.
“All we have up here are dolphin, hardly any flying fish at all,” he stated.
Those who love the delicacy have been forking out the money, but others have been choosing alternatives like dolphin, which is now being sold at $5.00 a pound or at $5.50 for the “ready-cleaned” variety.
