Thousands of schoolchildren thronged to Barbados’ biggest agricultural exhibition, Agrofest, this morning.
With some 250 exhibits on display at Queen’s Park in the City, the event is being held under the theme Achieving Healthy Lifestyles Through Agriculture and will run from today until Sunday.
Accompanied by teachers and guardians, more than 7 000 students from almost every school in the island had a close look at animals, foods, plants, vegetables, jewellery and other exhibits.
They petted rabbits, stared in fascination at black belly sheep, cows and birds and got a feel of some local fruit.
Minister of Education Ronald Jones, who toured the exhibition with chief executive officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), James Paul, told the NATION he was pleased by the “very massive turnout by the children and their teachers”.
The exhibition opened to schoolchildren today from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; and to the general public from 4:00 p.m.
Events scheduled for today include the Enlarged Bird Show, the Lime Contact Band Pork Lime, and the Royal Barbados Police Force Floodlight Tattoo.
Tomorrow the showcase will run from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and the highlights of the day include the livestock shows and The Best Of Crop Over Live In Concert.
Events scheduled for Sunday include the Plantation Breakfast, Gymkhana and Agility Dog Show, the Goat Show, and An Evening of Gospel. On that day, the exhibition will be open from 8:00 a.m. and close at 9:00 p.m. (RP/BGIS)
