Monyata Riviera and Jevon Gaskin emerged as triple-crown champions when the curtain came down on the Barbados Badminton Association Junior National Championships 2011 at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex on Wednesday night.
Playing in the Under-19 division, Gaskin and Riviera teamed up in the mixed doubles to defeat Finn West and Mikeila Carrington 21-12, 21-16. Â
Earlier, Riviera brushed aside Carrington in the girls’ singles, 21-10, 21-19, to repeat her victory of 2010.
Ironically, Carrington teamed up with Riviera and the pair claimed the girls’ doubles over Lisa King and Cheriann Fanus, 21-11, 21-11. Â
Gaskin linked with West to beat Sabeel Foster and Cory Fanus 21-16, 21-19. Â
Gaskin also showed D’Andre Thorpe that it was not easy to play above his Under-17 group by whipping him 21-16, 21-15 to win the Boys’ Under-19 singles.
The match of the night was the Boys’ Under-17 singles, with Foster upsetting Cory Fanus 18-21, 22-20, 23-21 in a one-hour marathon. Â
Foster and Fanus had met in the 2010 Under-15 finals, with Fanus triumphing on that occasion. They combined to clinch the Boys’ Under-17 doubles, stopping Shae Martin and Jordan Ollivierre 21-13, 21-8.
Both Martin and Ollivierre are actually Under-13s and in their finals’ clash, Martin emerged the champion, 21-16, 21-12. Â
The Girls’ Under-13 division was contested in the round-robin format with Amanda Haywood destroying Aliyah Briggs 21-2, 21-2 and then treating Danielle Riley with similar disdain, 21-3, 21-3.
Kyle Wood beat Nathan Riley 17-21, 21-15, 21-12 to win the Boys’ Under-11 final before the two joined forces in the doubles to dismiss Nicolai Allard and Petter Toppin 21-16, 21-7. (KB)
