Most?Barbadian taxpayers seem to think electronic filing is the way forward.
Just over 10 000 had already filed their income tax returns electronically and, according to Inland Revenue senior inspector Neville Clarke, two in every three working Barbadians were completing their forms on the computer.
“Those who aren’t competent are getting persons to help them, and a lot of the accountants are filing for individuals as well,” he said.
“What is better this year, is that several of the audit firms have gone more towards electronic filing. While they were sceptical in the first few years because of security issues, they are feeling more comfortable now and they are filing returns online a lot more.”
However, Clarke was concerned about the large number of firms that were waiting late to submit information to Inland Revenue.
Clarke told the DAILY?NATION the absence of that information had prevented people from filing.
Firms should have despatched income tax slips to employees by February 28, and Clarke said when they failed to do so, more often than not, it was usually those who were filing for the reverse tax credit.
