A Horse Hill, St Joseph family is now trying to come to grips with the tragedy caused by an early morning fire that destroyed one of its homes and damaged the other.
It was around 1:30 a.m. yesterday when Maurice Chase heard something crackling and went to investigate.
The 24-year-old got the shock of his life when he looked outside and saw the unoccupied house he had purchased just over a year ago on fire.
The fire spread rapidly through the house where Chase was making some repairs because he hoped to occupy it soon.
Chase’s mother Ernitha said that when the fire broke out the water in the area was off and the family used what little it had, along with supplies from neighbours in an effort to save the two houses.
“When Maurice rushed to the pipe, the water was off so the only thing we could do is then take the water we had saved and try to put out the fire,” she admitted.
The 51-year-old mother, who said she was hurting, reported that the back of her home suffered fire and water damage, but they could still occupy the front part.
Neither home was insured.
One fire truck from Bridgetown responded to the blaze.
Chase lives with her three sons and a grandson.
